How we interpret other animals, their intelligence and emotions, has real impacts on their lives.

When considering animals, we have to keep in mind our individualized perception. Our point of view relates to and complicates human-animal and human-nature interactions.

What this looks like:

Observation:

  • Monitoring animal behavior in zoos

Literature review:

  • Stereotypies in horses, dogs, and nondomestic animals- and the differing approaches in addressing and defining them

  • How public perception of animals relates to action for and caring about their conservation

  • Technology as something which enhances or detracts from nature experiences

Qualitative research:

  • Designing surveys, focus groups, human observation methods, and interviews to better understand how we make sense of the animals around us
